Hi, I'm Jason — and I go to the root, not the surface
I'm a Registered Psychotherapist and the Clinical Director here at Aurora Village Therapy. My wife Jodie and I started our practice in Newmarket in 2018, and today we care for people from two locations — here in Aurora and in Newmarket — with one team and one way of working. I have spent more than twenty years doing this work, training with some of the leading voices in trauma, neuroscience and body-centred healing.
Most of my work is with people carrying trauma — PTSD, childhood wounds, attachment injuries, and a nervous system that has never quite felt safe. I also work closely with couples and with first responders, whose work exposes them to things most people never see. Alongside my own clients, I supervise our qualifying therapists, which keeps me close to how this work is taught and practised.
Symptoms are messengers. Anxiety, depression, the same argument on repeat — they point to something older underneath. My work follows them back to their source, and heals from there.
Jason Koenigbaur · Aurora Village TherapyThree ideas guide everything I do
I don't believe lasting change comes from managing symptoms. Underneath anxiety or a painful pattern there is almost always something older — a part of you that learned long ago to brace, to hide, or to go quiet to stay safe. We work with that.
Root-cause healing
We follow the symptom to where it began, instead of talking around it.
Mind and body together
The nervous system holds what the mind tries to forget, so I use EMDR, somatic work and neurofeedback to reach it directly.
Reconnecting to you
Beneath the defences there is a steadier, more whole version of you. The work is finding your way back to it.
The principle I return to most is from Gestalt therapy: the more fully you can accept yourself — including the parts you have rejected — the more you change. I am not here to push you to be different. I am here to help you meet all of who you are.
You might be a good fit for my practice if…
- Talk therapy has helped before, but never quite reached the thing underneath.
- You are carrying trauma, PTSD, or childhood experiences that still shape your present.
- You are a first responder, and the usual advice has never fit your reality.
- You and your partner keep landing in the same painful loop.
- You want to work with the body and nervous system, not only talk.
- You are ready to go a little deeper than symptom management.
What a first session looks like
A free call with Susan
Before we begin, Susan listens to what is bringing you in and makes sure I am the right fit — and if I am not, she matches you with someone who is.
An unhurried first session
We get to know what you are carrying and what you are hoping for. There is no pressure to relive anything before you are ready.
We go at your pace
We work at the speed your nervous system can handle — building safety first, then going deeper together.

What I help with
You have seen what most people never will
If you are a police officer, firefighter, paramedic or emergency worker, hypervigilance, numbing, moral injury and PTSD are not weakness — they are a normal nervous system responding to abnormal exposure. Talk alone rarely reaches trauma that lives in the body rather than the story.
I use EMDR, somatic work and neurofeedback to work with the nervous system directly, in a space that is confidential and free of judgment. I know the culture and the stigma that can make reaching out hard — and I build the work around what actually helps.
